Understanding Masses in Pets
Pet ownership comes with the responsibility of addressing and treating health concerns. An unwanted mass can be detected during wellness exams or noticed by an attentive pet owner. While many pets will encounter a mass at some point in their lives, it’s important to remember that most masses are non-life-threatening. However, nearly all require some form of treatment or removal, typically through surgery.
After testing the mass or performing a biopsy to confirm its diagnosis, we will provide a detailed analysis of the mass, including its size, shape, type, and how it may be affecting your pet’s health and well-being. Once a diagnosis is confirmed, we will propose a treatment plan tailored to your pet’s needs.
What to Expect
- Surgical Recommendations: If surgery is needed, we may run additional tests to assess your pet’s overall health before scheduling the procedure. These tests may include:
- Complete Blood Count (CBC): This blood test measures the quantity and quality of red and white blood cells, as well as platelets. It helps identify conditions such as dehydration, anemia, or infection, providing insight into your pet’s overall health.
- Urinalysis: This non-invasive test assesses kidney function and evaluates the risk of infection after surgery.
- Anesthesia and Surgery: General anesthesia or heavy sedation may be required for the procedure. Rest assured, your pet will be in expert hands as our team works diligently to remove any masses.
Aftercare and Recovery
In the days and weeks following surgery, your pet will need extra rest. Here are some recommendations to facilitate their healing:
- Limit Activity: Keep your pet away from energetic companions or small children to promote rest and comfort.
- Follow the Treatment Plan: Adhere to the prescribed treatment plan and instructions for post-operative care.
- Be Patient: Healing takes time, but with proper care, your pet will return to their usual self before you know it.
